NITROBENZENE

SYNONYMS: BENZENE, NITRO-; EEC No. 609-003-00-7; EINECS No. 202-716-0; ESSENCE OF MIRBANE; ESSENCE OF MYRBANE; MIRBANE OIL; NCI-C60082; NITROBENCENO (Spanish); NITROBENZOL (French); NITROBENZOL, L; NITRO, LIQUID; OIL OF MIRBANE; OIL OF MYRBANE; STCC 4921455

IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 98-95-3

DOT ID: UN1662

Hazard Class or Division: 6.1 (POISONOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS)

ERG Guide: 152

Formula: C6H5NO2

RTECS No: DA6475000

Properties: Very flammable, light yellow-green to brown, oily liquid; solid below 42°F (6°C). Pungent odor like bitter almonds or paste shoe polish. Some may not be able to smell this substance. Sinks in water; insoluble. Vapors are heavier than air; will collect in low areas. Combustion products include toxic nitrogen oxides.

Uses: Used in lubricating oils. Also used in manufacturing aniline dyes and synthetic rubber.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• IDLH: 200 ppm/1,024 mg/m3

IARC: Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans

NTP: Anticipated human carcinogen

• Odor threshold: 1.89 mg/m3 Odor is not a reliable indicator of the presence of toxic amounts of vapor.

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• Chemical protective clothing is recommended because vapor and liquid can be dermally absorbed and may contribute to systemic toxicity. Irritating to skin, eyes, nose and lungs. May interfere with the body's ability to use oxygen (affects the blood cells, causing formation of methemoglobin). A blood and nerve poison which is easily absorbed by the body. Exposure could cause drowsiness and loss of consciousness; the effects may be delayed. Breathing

the vapor, swallowing the material, or absorption through the skin can cause death. Chronic exposure may affect the bone marrow and liver.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV:* 1 ppm TWA; BEI: 5 mg[total p nitrophenol]/g creatinine in urine, end of shift at end of workweek; 1.5% methemoglobin in blood, end of shift. Confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans. (skin)

• OSHA PEL/NIOSH REL:* 1 ppm/5 mg/m3 TWA (skin)

• DFG BAT: 100 μ g[Aniline, released from anilinehemoglobin conjugate]/L in blood, for long-term exposure, after several shifts (sampling time) (skin)

Respirator: At any concentrations above the NIOSH REL, or where there is no REL, at any detectable concentration: SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any suppliedair respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode).

Escape: GMFOV [any airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front-or back-,mounted organic vapor canister] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, selfcontained breathing apparatus).

Reactivity: Forms explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with nitric acid, nitrogen tetroxide, caustics, ammonia, amines, phosphorus pentachloride, and chemically active metals such as tin or zinc. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings.

FIRE INFORMATION: Fire fighting gear, including SCBA, does not provide adequate protection. If exposure occurs, remove and isolate gear immediately and thoroughly decontaminate personnel. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   2

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1

Flash Point: 190°F (88°C)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 1.8%; UEL NA%

Autoignition Temperature: 900°F (482°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one–way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact) may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
